New W-2 and 1099 Filing Deadlines

The deadline for submitting government copies of your 2016 W-2 forms and 1099-MISC forms has been changed. The filing deadline is now January 31, 2017, a month earlier than the former filing date. The deadline for providing these same forms to your employees and/or contractors has not changed.

This means you will be required to provide W-2 forms to your employees and 1099-MISC forms to your contractors AND file the government copies of each to the appropriate federal agency by the same January 31 deadline.

This shortened deadline period between year-end and the filing date makes it very important for small business owners to have obtained all necessary information from employees and contractors and to be well prepared to complete year-end tasks.

Note: A 1099 form is not required for any contractors who earned less than $600 during the year period.
